Just like spring break, but in January

Man, has the weather has glorious this past week. While the rest of the country is dealing with blizzards, major snowstorms, gray skies and rain, in sunny So Cal we’ve had mercury in the mid-70’s and beautiful blue skies. It feels more like we just celebrated Easter rather than Christmas.

A combination of leftovers and Chuck reruns meant we were wide awake earlier than most of our fellow Valley residents (yes, yes, we really know how to live it up on a Friday night). So, after a wonderfully refreshing and long (did I mention hilly? My hips are still sore) hike under a perfect blue sky we enjoyed bagels and coffee. I tell you, the Valley is fantastic if you enjoy it before 10am on a weekend morning. We decided to play hooky from the million and one baby and house-related chores we had finish, and take a greater Los Angeles driving tour. First up: the Ahmanson Theater in downtown for a matinee showing of Mary Poppins. A few hours later, with Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious stuck on repeat in our heads, we decided to head over to the Westside for dinner – where we admired both a stunning sunset from the freeway and our wise decision to buy a house in the Valley instead of the Westside (we like to pretend our realtor didn’t laugh at us when we originally wanted to live in that part of town). We went to Cantalini’s for dinner in Playa del Rey, a favorite of ours when J lived a mere one mile from the beach. To me, there is nothing better than the salty smell of the sea air and cioppino. Then we went for ice cream at Diddy Reese, where I had a mint-chip ice cream sandwich for a buck and a half.

Sunday, with the grocery shopping complete, I had breakfast with my new favorite fellow, an almost two-year old with the most amazing eyelashes you’ve ever seen. His mom accompanied him, of course (I mean, he’s a smart kid, but probably still a little too young to drive by himself), and we stuffed ourselves silly with pancakes, bacon and fruit. The rest of God’s day of rest was spent napping in the beautiful sunshine, reading our Russian novels and eating Macaroni & Cheese, WITH BACON.

In case you were wondering, it was pretty much as life-changing as you’d think.
